Disaster risk in Fiji

Josefa Lalabalavu of Plan International and the Vanuatu Disaster READY Country Committee speaks about the regional impacts of the program.

Resilience to climate change and disaster preparedness are priorities for Fiji, an archipelago of more than 300 islands. The population of approximately 900,000 people are exposed to a range of hazards, including tropical cyclones (resulting in high winds, storm surges, and heavy rains), storms, floods, drought, earthquakes, and tsunamis. The Government of Fiji recognises the importance of integrated climate change adaptation, Disaster Risk Reduction and preparedness.

In Fiji, Disaster READY partners have supported the National Disaster Management Office, selected sub-national governments and other key humanitarian organisations, with training, advice and organisational support. AHP NGOs and local partners have helped communities through disaster planning, awareness-raising, improving knowledge and preparedness for disasters, the mapping of churches and other buildings as evacuation centres, volunteer training, strategic warehousing of supplies, and support for psychosocial and child protection activities.

Disaster READY in Fiji strengthened coordination mechanisms among humanitarian actors and has improved approaches to humanitarian action that meet the needs of women, men, children, people with disabilities, LGBTQI+ people, and the elderly.
